The Best Yarn Types for Different Crochet Projects (AKA Why Your Yarn Choice Actually Matters)

Picking yarn for a crochet project feels a little like online dating. Some look amazing at first… then 20 rows later you regret every decision you’ve ever made. So before you throw your hook across the room, let’s talk about the yarns I personally reach for the most and what they’re actually good for.

Chenille Yarn — The Squishy Favorite

If you’ve seen those adorable squishy crochet plushies all over social media, chances are they were made with chenille yarn. This yarn is super soft, fluffy, and thick — basically the marshmallow of the yarn world. It comes in a variety of thicknesses, from super skinny to super fat. Each with its own purpose.

For me, I LOVE chenille for amigurumi because:

  • It works up FAST
  • It gives plushies that cozy stuffed-animal feel
  • It hides stitches really well
  • It makes projects look fancy with minimal effort (we love that)

The downside? Chenille can absolutely humble you if your tension is too tight. Some brands shed like a golden retriever in summer, while others are buttery soft perfection. Trial and error is unfortunately part of the chenille experience.

Best for:

  • Plushies & amigurumi
  • Blankets
  • Pillows
  • Cozy décor

Cotton Yarn — Pretty but Slightly Judgy

Cotton yarn is gorgeous. Clean stitches. Crisp texture. Super polished finished projects. But let me warn you now — cotton yarn has basically zero stretch. None. Zip. So if your tension is tight, your hands WILL file complaints.

That said, cotton is amazing for wearables and structured projects because it holds shape beautifully and feels breathable instead of sweaty and sad.

Not all cotton yarns are created equal though. Some feel soft and dreamy while others feel like crocheting with kitchen twine. Spend the extra few dollars when you can — your wrists deserve happiness.

Best for:

  • Wearables
  • Market bags
  • Dishcloths
  • Summer projects
  • Bucket hats

Acrylic Yarn — The Reliable Budget Bestie

Acrylic yarn is the dependable friend that shows up every single time. It’s affordable, easy to find, beginner-friendly, and comes in enough colors to make your craft room look mildly concerning.

Unlike cotton, acrylic has stretch, which makes it easier on your hands and much more forgiving when your tension decides to have a personality disorder halfway through a project.

It may not always have the luxury feel of natural fibers, but honestly? Acrylic gets way more hate than it deserves.

Best for:

  • Blankets
  • Hats & scarves
  • Beginner projects
  • Everyday wearables
  • Budget-friendly projects

So… Which Yarn Is Best?

Honestly? There’s no single “best” yarn. It depends on what you’re making and how much patience you currently have left.

  • Want plushies that look adorable and work up quickly? Chenille.
  • Want polished wearables with crisp stitches? Cotton.
  • Want affordable yarn that won’t fight you emotionally? Acrylic.

At the end of the day, yarn shopping is part crafting… part emotional support hobby. Try different fibers, test different brands, and don’t be afraid to become irrationally loyal to one specific yarn line. We’ve all been there.

Till Next time.....
